Thanksgiving
Boy, what a change! Over Thanksgiving we picked up our little Honda car in Tallahassee. Then we picked up our Ford truck in Panama City, as I had to return to Jacksonville ahead of Kathy and Rachel to fly with my new students. From dinghy and bicycle to car and truck. It’s funny though how quickly we readjust to “normal” life (except that we still live on a boat which is certainly not normal for the vast majority of US citizens). While I’m at the Craig airport, Kathy and Rachel can be shopping or running errands. Two different directions at once- what a concept!
Kathy’s Sister Kari, husband Mike, and daughter Kami hosted a wonderful Thanksgiving for us and parents Brud and Jean from Illinois. We had fabulous meals including turkey of course, along with a cranberry and rum side dish among others. Bananas Foster pancakes in the morning and sumptuous leftover lunches midday kept me in slow motion for a few days. So I spent considerable time on our new Gateway laptop installing all the old programs, files, and pictures. We took advantage of the early Christmas sales to purchase the most bang for the buck, and so far it’s working well after some early break in problems (with me- not the computer).
Mike and Kari have a neighboring rental house which was empty, so we had an entire house to ourselves- another huge shock to our systems. Activities included tennis, hot tub, Casino Royale movie, Chinese checkers, video movies at home, walks, baseball, basketball, and teasing the dogs.
A 2 hour drive brought us to Panama City where I spent one short day and night before heading back to Jacksonville. Kathy and Rachel stayed on for a few days to help decorate the house for Christmas and take a boat ride in Dad’s Boston Whaler to Shell Island for an afternoon.
Now we’re back home and settling into our routines of school for Rachel and flying and scuba lessons for me. (And a necessary boat project per day). My flight students are avid divers and spear fishermen, so we get to swap diving and flying stories. I’ve finished the NAUI Scuba Diver book, so the next steps are classroom, swimming pool, then a dive in a freshwater spring south of Tallahassee next Saturday.
We’ve extended our slip space till mid January in order to continue the flight training for my students. Rachel will camp with her friend Erin on De Soto state park and island near Tampa from December 26 till January 2 or so. Then we’ll be heading for Bimini and beyond.
